Don’t let a pay freeze leave your staff out in the cold

Local insurance broker advises employers to look at low cost healthcare for employees
IT’S that time of year again when employees across the country traditionally sit down with bosses for their annual staff reviews in the hope that their hard work throughout the year will be rewarded with a pay rise.
Unfortunately, as a result of the economic downturn, recent years have seen many workers subjected to a pay freeze, if not a pay cut, which in turn can have a detrimental impact on businesses with staff feeling demotivated and demoralised.
One local company, Moira-based Independent Healthcare Solutions (IHS) is urging employers not to leave their employees feeling out in the cold with a pay freeze by offering a solution that will be of great benefit to staff but at relatively low cost to the business.
As Northern Ireland’s only specialist healthcare broker, IHS is advising companies who cannot afford to reward their staff financially to consider offering their workers a private healthcare plan which is now available, through the company’s exclusive partnership with Benenden Health, from as little as £8.19 per employee per month which works out at less than £100 for the full year.
“The past few years have certainly been very tough for businesses and even though there are signs of growth in certain sectors, many companies may still not be in a position to offer pay rises to their staff which can have a negative impact on both the employee and the business as a result of employees feeling undervalued and demotivated,” said IHS managing director Audrey Spence.
“However, as an exclusive agent for Benenden Health in Northern Ireland, we are in a position to help companies solve this problem by offering their staff private healthcare that is much more affordable to businesses and also a considerable benefit to employees, especially in the current climate when the National Health Service is under so much pressure,” she added.
“For less than a hundred pounds per year, bosses can show their staff that their contribution to the business throughout the year has been noted and is valued. Companies will barely notice the monthly payments yet it really could make a life-changing difference to staff,” concluded Audrey.
Voted the UK’s most trusted healthcare provider for three years running from 2011 to 2013, Benenden Health offers a wide range of services including local consultation and diagnosis, treatment and surgery in clean comfortable hospitals as well as 24 hour GP and Stress Counselling helplines.
Its healthcare plan is offered regardless of age and provides members with full advisory and financial support with no exclusions for people with existing conditions. Employers who apply must have a minimum of five employees.
Berni McAteer, Corporate Account Manager at Benenden Health said, “This is a really exciting opportunity for us and we are looking forward to be able to reach out to businesses in a range of sectors in Northern Ireland. With our recent change in eligibility criteria the fact that our services are now available to all businesses means that it’s the ideal time for us to speak to organisations who are looking for a cost-effective way to improve their absence management.
“Health and wellbeing in the workplace is a key issue for businesses – particularly within smaller organisations. Our corporate health plan offers employers peace of mind and helps to achieve a healthier, happier workforce at an affordable cost. We look forward to working with Independent Healthcare Solutions to help achieve these goals with businesses in the area,” she added.
Benenden Health was founded in 1905 as a result of the aspirations of ordinary people who grouped together to form a low cost mutual model that would provide high quality, affordable healthcare. The partnership with Independent Healthcare Solutions is the company’s first broker partnership in Northern Ireland.
Established in 2002, Independent Healthcare Solutions offers specialist and independent advice across a number of areas including group and individual medical insurance, cash plans, new and existing schemes, competitive renewals, discounted corporate schemes and assistance in removing health exclusion issues.
